Welcome Letter from the Congress Chair
On behalf of the 2020 Organizing committee I would like to extend a warm welcome to the CCSSA National Congress which will be held from the 23rd to the 26th of July at The Birchwood Conference Centre in Johannesburg.
As we move into a new decade, it seems pertinent to assess and contextualize the role of critical care within the broader realm of healthcare in Southern Africa. With this in mind we have themed our meeting “Seeing the bigger picture” and we hope to have an exciting meeting which stresses the amazing outcomes possible with the highest level of medical care, while reminding us that we are part of a larger ecosystem which thrives secondary to an ever evolving symbiosis between all the different role players.
As always, we are proud to host an amazing faculty which will include numerous leading lights from the world of critical care to provide a global perspective to our meeting. We have planned a programme to promote a rich exchange of ideas together with opportunities for hands on learning and sessions where delegates can really “meet the experts”. Workshops will encompass Mechanical Ventilation, Cardio-Respiratory Ultrasound, ESPEN Life Long Learning modules, Nursing, Ethics and for the first time in South Africa, two modules from the Current Concepts in Critical Care. We will also showcase the Risky Business of medical education, originally developed at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in conjunction with Ferrari. Our Sepsis session will provide unique perspectives to presentation and management of sepsis across the world, and will feature Neill Adhikari (Canada), Scott Weiss (US), Francesca Rubulotta (UK), Gavin Joynt (Hong Kong), Rajeev Hegde (Australia).
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our trade partners for their immense support of critical care education. I am quite certain that delegates will find a wealth of information at the exhibition stands and I encourage you to engage with our trade partners to experience the very latest technology ”hands-on”. Our “Meet the Experts” sessions will also be held within the Exhibition Centre and perhaps attend a session at our “Product Theatre”.
It has been more than 20 years since the CCSSA congress was held in Johannesburg and to commemorate this special occasion we will showcase a little of our amazing history during a Gala dinner which will be a night to remember. After all, would congress be complete without a world-class party?
I am looking forward to welcoming all of you to a spectacular congress in Johannesburg, the city of Gold. Thank you for continuing with us on our journey to the peak of critical care.
2020 Congress Chair
Welcome Letter from the SASPEN Congress
SASPEN looks forward to welcoming you to the 6th joint national congress with the CCSSA to be held at The Birchwood Conference Centre in Johannesburg from 23 – 26 July 2020.
The theme for this year is Seeing the bigger picture: an essential and necessary quality for any healthcare professional. It is of importance to all healthcare professionals not only to be knowledgeable on the latest evidence-based practices in their own field of training but to also be mindful of the practices of the other essential role players in the multidisciplinary team. Nutrition support is but part of Seeing the bigger picture in the management of the critically ill and we look forward to sharing the latest progress, evidence and trends in feeding the critically ill patient by both international as well local faculty, all experts in the field of nutrition in critical care. Furthermore, we are excited to participate in plenary sessions that involve all role players in the healthcare of critically ill patients, emphasizing the necessity and importance of multidisciplinary teamwork in Seeing the bigger picture.
We also invite all delegates to participate in our pre-congress nutrition workshops, ranging from live ESPEN LLL courses on ICU- and parenteral nutrition, to more hands-on workshops on practical aspects of enteral nutrition as well as the gastrointestinal tract anatomy.
Any congress will be lacking without the support of one’s trade partners. A huge thank you to you all for your enthusiasm, care and backing of education in nutrition support in critical illness. Please make use of the opportunity to visit the exhibition stands to engage and obtain information on the latest trends in this field.
We look forward to seeing you in the City of Gold for exciting plenary sessions, pre-congress workshops, research updates in the field of clinical nutrition, many discussions and networking opportunities, as we continue to contribute to Seeing the bigger picture in critically ill healthcare.
SASPEN President (2019 – 2021)
